Michigan Motorcycle Safety Courses

In order to obtain a motorcycle endorsement in Michigan, many people must take and complete an approved motorcycle safety course. This includes people under the age of 18 and drivers over the age of 18 who have failed two motorcycle skills tests.

The motorcycle safety courses are offered through the Michigan Secretary of State’s office or through a third party program approved by the Secretary of State. Buckfire & Buckfire do not offer motorcycle safety courses. A list of approved Michigan motorcycle safety program courses can be found online.

There are several safety courses for new and experienced motorcyclists. Taking a motorcycle safety course can help bikers avoid accidents and, hopefully, minimize the severity of any accidents that do occur

The Basic Rider Course is the beginning level program. This is a safety course designed for new or inexperienced riders who need to learn or be refreshed on basic riding techniques.

The Performance Based Course is a one-day class for an experienced rider. Completion of this course allows the biker to get his completion card endorsed.

The Experienced Rider Course is a safety course designed for an experienced motorcyclist who wants more than the basics. This course teaches deeper fundamentals of riding to riders that already have their endorsements. Many organized group riders require this course before experienced bikers can register with them.

Michigan Motorcycle Endorsement | Driving Tests

To obtain a Michigan Motorcycle endorsement, you must register your motorcycle and complete the rest of the requirements for a motorcycle endorsement. The Secretary of State’s office administers a number of driving tests which are required for the motorcycle endorsement.

Vision Test

You must pass a vision test. This is a typical vision test, which will require you to read letters of varying sizes off a chart.

Written Driver’s Knowledge Test

You must also pass a written driver’s knowledge test. This test is based on information that can be found in the Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual. It will require you to know the rules of the road and general information about motorcycles. You can obtain a copy of the Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual by clicking on the book’s title.

Skills Test

Adults may elect to pass an motorcycle rider skills test administered by a third party approved by the Secretary of State. This test will examine basic vehicle control and crash avoidance skills to evaluate a biker’s ability to handle safe and hazardous traffic situations. The test will be scored on the biker’s ability to select safe speeds to perform maneuvers, choose the correct path and stay within fixed boundaries or lanes, complete normal and quick stops, and complete normal and quick turns and swerves.

Adults may also choose to complete a motorcycle safety course, which will include an evaluation of these same things. Minors under the age of 18 must complete a motorcycle safety course.

Buckfire & Buckfire does not offer motorcycle courses. To see what courses are available visit the Michigan Secretary of State Motorcycle Safety Program Courses

Michigan Motorcycle Registration

Michigan law requires all motorcycles that are operated on public roadways to be registered with the Secretary of State. Motorcycle registration is issued for one year and expires on the owner’s birthday.

Registration is a simple process. To register your motorcycle, you will need to:

  • For new registrations, you must show title to your motorcycle
  • For renewal registrations, you can either show title, your notice of renewal, or last year’s registration
  • For all registrations, you must show a minimum of $20,000/$40,000 public liability and $10,000 property damage coverage. Read more about PLPD insurance.
  • For new registrations, it will be necessary to go to the Secretary of State’s office. Renewal registrations can be done online at the Secretary of State’s webpage. The State will charge you a fee, which you can pay by credit card when registering online.
