Motorcycle Safety Is Key To Enjoying The Open Road

As the weather continues to improve, more and more motorcycles are taking to the road. In order to keep this hobby safe and enjoyable for everyone, you should take a few moments to review some motorcycle safety tips.

Motorcyclists, you should carefully inspect your bike before traveling. Drive defensively and motor vehicle drivers can't or don't see you. Although it seems like common sense, you should become an endorsed rider and familiarize yourself with the applicable laws. And because the bike itself doesn't offer much protection, wear protective gear, including a helmet, every time you ride.

Motor vehicle drivers, you are also responsible for the safety of motorcycle enthusiasts. Motorcycles are relatively small and can be concealed in your blind spots. They also accelerate quickly compared to other vehicles, so be sure to give yourself extra time before pulling out in front of one. Often, you will be able to hear a motorcycle before you actually see it, so music volume should be kept in check.

Sadly, May and June have seen a number of serious motorcycle accidents in Michigan. At least two of these incidents have been fatal, though they do not necessarily represent ordinary scenarios. Still, these crashes demonstrate exactly how small the margin of error is for a motorcyclist.

Moped Accident With Minivan in Coldwater Kills Rider

On October 14th, a moped rider was killed by a Minivan in Coldwater in Branch County. According to the Coldwater Police Department, the moped operator headed north on Michigan Avenue when he was allegedly struck by a Chevrolet Venture minivan attempting to turn onto US-12.

According to witnesses, the moped driver hit the windshield of the minivan and was thrown 30 feet from the moped. The moped rider suffered serious head injuries, internal injuries and broken legs as a result of the accident. He was flown to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo where he died from his injuries.

I  am very sorry to hear that this tragic moped accident happened. My condolences go out to the family and friends of the moped rider.

Our Michigan motorcycle accident lawyers advise bikers of their legal rights. Because this moped accident involved contact with another motor vehicle, the injured rider may be eligible for Michigan No-Fault Insurance benefits. These benefits provide for payment of medical expenses, lost wages, attendant care services, and other benefits. Family members may also may be able to make a claim for Survivor Loss Benefits for the deceased rider. This can include payment of funeral expenses, lost wages, and loss of other services.

Also, the family members of the deceased victims may have a claim for a Michigan wrongful death lawsuit against the driver that police determine was negligent and caused these car accidents. At the very least, the surviving family should hire the best possible lawyer to look into these possibilities.

For a complete explanation of the rights of injured bikers in Michigan, you should request our FREE BOOK, “The Ultimate Michigan Motorcycle Accident Handbook.” Furthermore, the surviving family members may have a claim against the driver of the motor vehicle for wrongful death of the bikers. Fatal Kent County Drunk Driver Motorcycle Accident

I heard a tragic story on the news over the weekend about a fatal Kent County drunk driver motorcycle accident. According to the Grand Rapids Police, Stafford Ray was travelling on Division Avenue near Labelle when a 2003 Ford Mustang allegedly struck his 1997 Kawasaki motorcycle as it turned onto Labelle. Ray’s motorcycle caught fire and he died on the scene. Police state that the Mustang was allegedly driven by Ronald Windom, who was driving on a suspended license. Police suspect that alcohol was involved and continue to investigate this tragic accident.

I  am very sorry to hear that this tragic and fatal motorcycle accident happened. My condolences go out to the family and friends of the biker.
