Michigan Motorcycle Basic Rider Safety Course

The Basic Rider Course is a motorcycle safety course designed for inexperienced and new riders who want to get their motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. This course is “driver’s ed” for motorcycles.

The Basic Rider Course is approximately 15 hours. It consists of a classroom component that builds on lessons from driver’s ed about the rules of the road and adds a discussion of how motorcycles can be operated so that cars are less likely to ignore them. There is also a range riding component that is used for practice riding.

The Basic Rider Course is usually given over the course of a single weekend, although individual sponsors of a course might offer different options. As part of the course, the sponsor will administer a written driver’s knowledge test about the rules of the road and a rider’s skill test in which the biker demonstrates his ability to handle turns, stop and start, and safely ride a motorcycle. Buckfire & Buckfire does not offer this course. To see what courses are available visit the Michigan Secretary of State Motorcycle Safety Program Courses.

After completing the Basic Rider Course, a new rider will be able to present the results of these tests to the Secretary of State’s office and will be able to receive a motorcycle endorsement as long as he or she satisfies the other requirements for the endorsement.
