Home Modifications and Accommodations

Michigan No Fault insurance benefits are available when a biker has been injured in an accident involving a car, truck, SUV, or other motor vehicle.  Many times, the victim of a Michigan motorcycle accident has suffered significant injuries resulting in the need for a wheelchair and other accomadations.  Under the No-Fault law, a person with these injuries is elibible for Home Modification and Accommodation benefits.   These are very important benefits but, most people do not even realize they are part of their No Fault insurance policy.

Home Modification and Accommodation benefits are paid when the injured person cannot live in his or her current home or apartment comfortably because of disabilities or injuries caused by a motor vehicle accident.  The No Fault insurance company is required to pay the cost of altering or remodeling a home to accommodate these disabilities.

Common examples of the remodeling that might be necessary include installing a ramp; making doorways wider so a wheel chair can fit through; installing a different bathtub, shower or toilet; and fitting handle bars to a wall so that injured people can use their arms to pull themselves out of bed or out of the shower.

There is no set amount or maximum limit for home modification benefits.  Instead, the No Fault Act requires the insurance company to pay any amount as long as it is reasonable and necessary.  An accident victim is entitled to receive these benefits even if he or she lives with someone who is not disabled.
