Scooter Accident Results in Deaths of Pregnant Woman, Crystal M. Grimes, and Her Infant

What should have been a joyful occasion—the delivery of an infant—for the family of Crystal M. Grimes, 30, turned into a tragic event on March 27, 2010. The child was delivered at High Point Regional Hospital following a scooter accident that ultimately resulted in the deaths of both the baby and the mother.

Crystal M. Grimes was 25 weeks pregnant when she was in a scooter accident in High Point, North Carolina that caused her death. Though her baby was born alive at High Point Regional Hospital, injuries sustained as a result of the wreck caused the child’s death as well.

Jerry Lee Phillips, 57, of High Point was driving the scooter that crashed and caused the unfortunate deaths of Crystal and her infant. He was charged with driving while impaired, according to an article on digtriad.com.

Family members of Crystal Grimes should know that the scooter accident that ended in Crystal and her baby’s deaths is under investigation by both police and insurance companies. Grieving families are often overwhelmed with the deaths of their loved ones, especially when the death was accidental and unexpected.

Traffic Fatalities Fell in 2009, But Michigan’s Repeal of Motorcycle Helmet Law Doesn’t Bode Well

You may have seen the recent report released by the Department of Transportation that indicates that highway fatalities fell in 2009 as compared to previous years. In fact, the 2009 numbers are the lowest that nation’s seen since 1954. NHTSA attributes the decline to increased seat belt use, campaigns that discourage drunk driving, and the use of cell phones or text-messaging devices while behind the wheel.

Michigan corroborated these findings with the state’s own statistics:

  • Motorcycle-involved fatalities fell from 127 in 2008 to 105 in 2009, a drop of 17 percent.

  • Commercial motor vehicle-involved fatalities dropped 28 percent, from 106 in 2008 to 76 in 2009.

  • The state recorded zero school bus-related traffic deaths in 2009, down from four in 2008. There has not been a child killed on a school bus in Michigan since 1989.

  • Cell phone-involved crashes fell from 919 in 2008 to 866 in 2009. (Michigan cannot track crashes involving texting specifically.)

  • The number of car-deer crashes remained fairly steady, up 1 percent from 2008. There were 61,486 deer-involved crashes in 2009.

  • Pedestrian fatalities increased 10 percent, up from 114 in 2008 to 125 in 2009.

These statistics show a great improvement in Michigan’s previous number of deaths caused by highway accidents. Overall, Michigan’s traffic deaths reached a milestone of 871 total in 2009 when, just a just a decade ago in 1999, 1,386 people died in highway accidents. However, before we write off highway traffic accidents as a problem of the past, lawmakers recently repealed the helmet requirement for motorcyclists, prompting safety advocates to warn of the possibility for increased motorcycle-related fatalities as a result.

Dump Truck Plows Into Stopped Motorcycles Killing Three and Injuring Eight

The associated press is reporting that a group of eight (8) motorcycle riders stopped at a red light were rammed from behind by a dump truck killing three (3) riders and injuring six (6) others. Among the critically injured is a Phoenix Fire Department Captain. The press release describes the scene of the motorcycle truck crash as horrific.

Some of the motorcycles burst into flames under the dump truck, while others ended up scattered behind the truck. Television images of the crash site showed a horrifying collection of mangled chrome Harley-Davidson bikes and scattered personal belongings, including pairs of riders' boots laying in the roadway.

"It's a horrific scene," Phoenix Fire Deputy Chief Frank Salomon.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased as well as those injured. We hope the facts preceding the collision can shed some light on what happened and hopefully reinforce both trucking and motorcycle safety issues.
